Leningrad - The man who sings

Exuberant portrait of notorious Russian punk band Leningrad and it’s charismatic frontman, Sergey "Shnur" Shnurov (Int. Music Film Festival MOFFOM 2008 Prague – In Competition)

Leningrad – The Man Who Sings
Director: Peter Rippl
Packed with rollicking live footage ‘The Man who sings’ is a feature film documentary on Russian Polkapunkband Leningrad. Playing a weird mix of Polka, Ska, Tango, Punk and traditional popular music these 15 conservatory educated ‘punks’ obtained cult status at the end of the nineties in Russia. But the film is more than just the bands onstage magic. It gives you an insight into how people perceived the massive changes in Russia over the past years, the dynamics of a fast, colourful and difficult decade. You’ll meet many people, in many different roles: Mastermind Shnurov as a rock star and a diligent worker, Leningrad fans and opponents, music business representatives, artists… with all but unanimous opinions on music, friendship, money, politics, language, and business.

Watch doc’s Filmfestival | Warschau 2009
This energy-packed documentary by Peter Rippl investigates the phenomenon of the most famous Russian rock band in recent years. Though the group "Leningrad" has now broken up, it stormed concert halls and clubs in half of Europe under the charismatic leadership of the unpredictable Sergej Shnurov, earning the reputation of a "Musical Molotov Cocktail." The movie consists mainly of material shot during live concerts of the band, which sometimes grows into an orchestra. Still, "The Man Who Sings" is much more than a recording of Shnurov's and Co.'s antics. Through interviews with fans, detractors, show business executives and artists, Rippl's film provides insight into changes ravaging Russian reality over the last decade.

Review ‚Zagrebdox’ in musika from Zoran Tuckar
From Russia with love
There it comes from Russia with love, a documentary about the very best Russian band Leningrad, which, as its very name says, originates from Sankt Petersburg.
Established in 1997 around the singer and main author, Sergej Snurov-Snur, Leningrad cherishes a sound built around three coordinates: ska, punk and Russki chansons.
They became well known for coursing and using street language in their songs, which was the reason why Moscow City Major banned their concerts in the Russian capital.

This ban was part of a incredible promotion and everything would probably remain at this stage had there not been these talented musicians and these brilliant observation of the Russian everyday life - and, with no hesitation, Snurov uses his sharp and pungent language to evoke the absurdity of modern life in transition.
Many of those troubles could be understood by the Croatian spectator of this film, and not only that, this spectator can identify himself with them...

One of the most striking songs we could hear in the film is definitely the song about the man to whom the bank will not give a loan, which is certainly not difficult to imagine in our everyday life; however, this is just one of many great songs.

The other thing is the whole team’s incredible energy, the enthusiasm and (positively speaking) the entire ensemble’s comradely feeling (it has indefinite number of members, more than ten, less than hundred). Nevertheless, the main figure is Sergej Shnurov-Shnur, the starter, and we would say the coordinator, the singer with the bitter voice, convinced about his mission. "If I could, I would make a few versions of myself. I have many ideas, but not enough hands to realize them…“says Shnur at the end, but not without certain dose of ego-maniacism.
Actually, it is difficult to divide the film from music, because it is dominant and carries the whole story, from the beginning to the end. But it is definitely never boring and there are no drops in quality. And how great the music is...

Anyway, it would be nice to see the follow-up of this music story, since the end of this film is definitely a happy one.
