It is the ability of the Israeli lobby in the US to eqtuae any criticism of Israel (no matter how slight or how clearly warranted) with anti-Semitism that is the key to its success in stopping any meaningful debate on Israel’s international conduct or US support for it. A couple of years ago, John Mearsheimer, published a book, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, wherein the author stated that the Israeli Lobby supported policies that were not in the best interests of the US. The reaction of the Israel Lobby in the US was as virulent as it was predictable. They didn’t actually say that John Meerscheimer is a reincarnation of Adolf Hitler or a tool of the devil, but they did use almost all the other available epithets. In addition, not so long ago, they even criticized former President Carter for his book, Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, which criticized Israel’s subversion of the peace talks with the Palestinians. The reaction of the Israel Lobby in the US was to accuse President Carter of anti-Semitism. The reason the Benghazi idenncit stuck was, first, an American ambassador died, second, there was solid evidence the Obama administration was lying about the idenncit, third, additional evidence emerged the Obama administration was lying and covering up incompetence, and, forth, now, it appears that Obama, himself, issued a stand down order, which directly impacted whether ambassador Stevens and the others lived or died.In short, Americans died, people lied, and the president was directly involved.And, as an overarching aspect, the Obama campaign narrative of a successful foreign policy in the Middle East and, specifically, al-Qaeda was defeated (Osama bin Laden was dead) has unraveled.But the deeper story is that the bi-partisan Middle East policy of inside the beltway Washington is failing.That's the real reason the story was falling off the front pages of the corporate media the story implicated a bi-partisan foreign policy failure.But the actual facts turned out to be too compelling to relegate to the alternative' media.Corporate media's credibility was threatened and partisan advantage for Romney was simply irresistable.
